Health Physics

SRA Professional Services Group also has extensive health physics experience in the domains of radiological assessment, site assessment and decommissioning, program assessments, and project or program management.

SRA has been involved in numerous, large-scale dose reconstruction programs and projects to evaluate the impacts of historical operations and emissions on both offsite and occupationally-exposed individuals. Our staff is adept in historical assessment, source term development, environmental fate and transport, dose and risk assessment, and uncertainty analysis. We have performed dose reconstructions for state and federal agencies and in support of litigation. We also have extensive experience in document search and retrieval efforts in the federal records domain, including in classified records facilities.

SRA staff is also adept at smaller-scale dose reconstruction efforts, such as the evaluation of inadvertent releases of contaminated equipment or materials, and have extensive experience in prospective assessments, such as those associated with establishing decontamination guidelines for structures, components, or open lands.

SRA's professional staff includes individuals with expertise in radiation metrology and the characterization of reference-quality and workplace radiation fields. Our staff have established reference-quality X-ray beams, photon fields, beta fields, and neutron dose equivalent rates for numerous dosimetry laboratories. We have also performed in situ neutron spectrometry to evaluate the efficacy of personnel monitoring methods for commercial nuclear and other facilities.

SRA staff has significant experience in decommissioning and have filled the roles of project manager, lead radiological engineer, and other key positions for numerous large-scale, high-profile decommissioning and decontamination projects, for both commercial and federal (former weapons complex) facilities. SRA staff has extensive experience in the development and implementation (including onsite management and oversight) of decommissioning plans and programs, and recognize the importance of fostering regulator/stakeholder involvement from the outset to avoid costly delays later on. SRA's services group can support all aspects of decommissioning, including development of site characterization plans, direction of onsite decontamination, waste stream characterization, planning and implementation of final status surveys, interfacing with regulators and stakeholders, and license termination. Combined with the proprietary survey technologies of our Technology Group, SRA provides a complete solution for decommissioning structures, bulk materials, or both; for license termination or divestment of property (footprint reduction).

SRA's services staff includes senior-level individuals with the experience to provide high-level assessments of organizational or programmatic practices, provide recommendations to management, and support the implementation of improvement initiatives as desired. SRA can provide assessments of overall radiation protection programs, or individual elements, such as process or effluent monitoring. SRA staff has provided such assessments for the US DOE and DOD, as well as for commercial nuclear facilities.
