UniTech Services Group, Inc. Laundry Facility
February 2004
Final release surveys were performed for the UniTech Services Group, Inc. (UniTech) laundry facility located in Columbia, SC during February 2003. The ultimate goal of these surveys was to demonstrate compliance with the site-specific radiological endpoint criteria for license termination. The request for service was expedited as an attempt to use an automated fixed survey monitor offered by another vendor had failed.
UniTech requested that SRA perform the survey in a fashion that would permit investigation levels of the following: Beta: 1000 dpm/100 cm2 averaged over 1 square meter with 5000 dpm/100 cm2 maximum; and Alpha: 300 dpm/100 cm2 averaged over 1 square meter and 1500 dpm/100 cm2 maximum. After the survey was completed, the client requested that all survey data be reanalyzed with the following limits: Alpha: 1000 dpm/100 cm2 averaged over 1 square meter and 3000 dpm/100 cm2 maximum; and Beta: 5000 dpm/100 cm2 averaged over 1 square meter and 15,000 dpm/100 cm2 maximum.
All surveys were performed with SRA’s Surface Contamination Monitor (SCM). A total of 1497m2 were surveyed in the main building, non-radioactive laundry building and exterior grounds (concrete). Some areas surveyed failed to meet the radiological criteria established and needed remediation. SRA provided detailed CAD drawings and location information for these areas. SRA’s SCM completed the survey with reports in under a week.
