Saxton: Final Release Surveys

Final Release Surveys

July 2003 - August 2003

SCM in wall mode at Saxton

Final release surveys were performed by Shonka Research Associates, Inc. (SRA) for GPU Nuclear (GPU) at the Saxton Nuclear Experimental Corporation (SNEC) facility during the period July, 2003 through August, 2003. The ultimate goal of these surveys was to demonstrate compliance with the site-specific radiological endpoint criteria for license termination agreed upon between GPU and the NRC. The EPC varied between 8k and 30k dpm/100cm 2 beta.

The final release surveys for the SNEC Facility performed using the SCM covered a total of 3440 m 2. The areas covered by the SCM included the warehouse and southwest garage pads, penelec lineshack, SSGS intake tunnels, SSGS discharge tunnel, SSGS footprint and firing aisle, and the containment vessel steam pipe tunnel.

The SCM was lowered thru a manhole and surveyed tunnels, with set up and operations initiated in under an hour. A single SCM was used in floor mode, wall mode, remote hand mode and fixed count mode, quickly and easily changing between modes as the survey conditions dictated.
