Rocky Flats: Building 123
Building 123, Final Release Survey
March 1998
Building 123 once housed medical research until such operations were relocated to Building 122, and it was the first building scheduled for demolition at RFETS in support of accelerated cleanup. Over 750 square meters of floor and wall surfaces were surveyed for alpha and beta emitting radionuclides, and more than 1.2 million measurements were taken in less than 5 shifts. The beta survey identified no contamination greater than site criteria. One previously undetected alpha contaminated area of about 350 dpm / 100 cm2 was identified. In addition to the technical advantages gained through the use of the SCM/SIMS system, the survey aided the project in minimizing cost and schedule overruns that were cause for significant concern.
