Point Beach Plant
Point Beach Plant
December 1998 - January 1999
A radiological survey was performed as part of the initial assessment actions undertaken to determine the cause and extent of contamination that existed in the down gradient areas surrounding the sewage pond at Point Beach Plant. Surveys were performed with in situ gamma measurements using the Subsurface Multi-Spectral Contamination Monitor (SMCM) as well as traditional in situ measurements with fixed Sodium Iodide (NaI(Tl)) scintillation detectors. During the survey more than 6500 gamma spectra were collected and analyzed
The measurements confirmed that the large field, used for burial of contaminated sludge removed from the sewage pond, was free of 137Cs contamination above the selected limit of 1 pCi/g. The survey also helped to bound the aerial extents of the contamination located to the west of the pond.
