Oak Ridge Associated Universities

Scarboro Facility

December 1997

Multiple joint surveys were performed using the SMCM in clean fields located behind the Scarboro Facility of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities. The surveys were performed as the final phase of research conducted under a contract for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Program. The surveys were performed to establish the capabilities of the SMCM and to intercompare the SMCM results with conventional survey methods such as in-situ gamma spectroscopy. The Environmental Survey and Site Assessment Program (ESSAP) Group, who performs independent verification surveys for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, performed the conventional surveys and provided test sources. Test sources were buried so that performance could be measured under realistic field conditions. The research demonstrated that collection of 20 second spectra were sufficient to permit identification of isolated microcurie level sources at depths of 40 centimeters.
