ETTP: K-1070A Landfill
K-1070A Landfill
April 1998
The K-1070A landfill was surveyed using the SMCM. The landfill is located at the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP, formerly the K-25 Site) near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Bechtel Jacobs Inc. (BJI, the Management and Integrating (M&I) Contractor for the K-25 Site) radiological staff coordinated and supervised the survey in the field. SRA participation was coordinated through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education's (ORISE's) Environmental Survey and Site Assessment Program (ESSAP) Group. The K-1070A burial ground was used in the 1960's and 1970's for burial of equipment from the K-25 site. The K-1070A burial ground was a several acre site located north of Building K-33. The site included burial pits in a rectangular array in the center of a fenced area, with trenches dug to either side. The pits were reported to be 16 feet deep with a four-foot overburden placed after filling and the four foot wide trenches were 12 feet deep with a three foot cover. The site has been undisturbed for a number of years, and the trenches could not be identified from the condition of the surface. A differentially corrected global positioning system (GPS) was used to determine the location of landmarks at the K-1070A burial ground. These landmarks included corners where the fence changed direction and monuments for pits that were located at the corners of the central pit area as well as the starting positions for the western trenches that were partially surveyed with the system. The GPS coordinates were logged and used to create a map of the burial ground to create an image that could be combined with the survey results. Elevated areas with primarily low energy photons, consistent with enriched uranium, were observed in the data set. This result indicated the unexpected presence of near surface uranium.
