BONUS Reactor Survey

July 1997

BONUS Reactor

This Characterization Survey was performed for the Jacobs Engineering Group, a subcontractor to the Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Operations Office. The BONUS Reactor was a power and research reactor in Rincon, Puerto Rico, which was shut down and de-fueled in the late 1960's. The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) plans to convert the building into a science museum. The facility survey was performed on 4 levels in an 83-foot diameter steel hemisphere along with some other areas in adjoining buildings. Environmental conditions during the survey were harsh, with temperatures ranging to 140ºF during the days. The 4,000 square meter survey was completed in two onsite weeks with an additional week in the States used for writing an executive summary and performing quality assurance on the automatically generated survey reports. Nearly 2 million measurements were recorded with 400 data points per square meter. The survey documented radiological conditions of 100% of all accessible floors and walls to one meter above the floor.
